“Don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” I can’t tell you how many times I heard that expression as a child. It’s one I’ve passed along to my own kids.

I remember one particular night during my senior year in high school. I waited until the last minute to type a research paper (pre-computer, no “save” feature.) Before the typewriter ever had a chance to cool off, and in my hurry to meet the deadline, I took the only original typed copy and tore it into pieces. The marked-up draft sat unscathed. Suffice it to say, it was a long night.

When we rush to get things done, because we’ve waited until the last minute, oftentimes, the output is far from ideal. We may find that:

  • Haste makes waste (the end product is subpar)
  • Internal stress increases
  • Something gets in the way of completing the job (we tear up the wrong paper, the computer crashes, an emergency arises)
  • We make excuses
  • We ask for an extension
  • We don’t remember to do the work at all.

In business, being last to

  • finish an assignment
  • to show up at a meeting
  • to meet a commitment or a deadline

may be an indication of a lack of competence, credibility and consistency, considered by some to be the main attributes of trust.

It is often said to give more work to the busiest person on the team. Perhaps it’s because they rarely finish last.

Today’s blog post is somewhat of a rant, but it contains a trust message. It’s about a call I received yesterday.

The conversation went something like this:

Him: Hi, it’s your buddy John Smith conference organizer. Trust Across America-Trust Around the World was kind enough to offer us a panel discussion of trust experts for our upcoming conference, but we decided to pass.

(Side Note: Several months ago this same group declined our panel of experts, but DID choose to use our idea and assemble their own panel on the topic of “trust.” The brochure description has little to do with the subject of trust itself, nor are any of the panelists experts, but hey,”trust” is a cool buzzword.)

Back to the conversation:

Him: Anyway, I have an even better offer for you. I would like you to come speak. Our speakers usually pay $10,000, but you can speak for $2500. We’ll even throw in free admission to the conference, and a dinner. And you can bring some books to sell.

Me: Huh? You want me to pay you for the “privilege” of  speaking at your event? I won’t pay to speak.

Him: Okay thanks, and take care.

Tell me you can’t pay me but don’t ask me to pay you. It’s not only insulting but speaks volumes about the “quality” of your conference. If I were an attendee, I would want to know, in advance of registering, how many of your speakers were paying to peddle their wares.

If you are a conference organizer and this is your business model, you are shooting yourself in the foot, from a quality perspective, and I’m about to tell you why.

Earlier this week I was asked to speak (without having to write out a check) at another conference next summer. I respectfully declined because I did not think I was the right person for this engagement, but offered up the names of several folks who are members of our Alliance, and who have the expertise to do an outstanding job. But first I checked in with these people to make sure they were available. Most of them wanted more information about the “quality” of the conference and the conference host. They have learned from past experience. They won’t compromise their integrity, nor will they agree to speak without a quality assurance. They certainly won’t pay.

This practice is becoming the industry “norm,” at many conferences.  Remember the expression about “getting what you pay for?” The conference organizer may be maximizing short-term profits, but they are failing to build the “right” long-term relationships. It’s what I call a long-term “lose/lose” and it certainly compromises the quality of the conference, and the reputation of the organization itself.

Too me, this business model is a trust-buster.

The Rutger’s University President has issued an apology to the Penn State President for offensive actions of Rutger’s fans at a recent football game.

Did he do the right thing? Was he extending trust?  Was this an act of integrity and ethics?

I’m on the fence on this one.

But this I know. Build trust and avoid crises and scandals (or at least minimize their impact).

Fail to proactively build trust, and the fallout from a scandal will continue for years.

What do we mean when we say “Trust is a Lifestyle?”

  • Trust is not a mathematical equation or formula
  • It is not a memo to be circulated at a meeting
  • It is not negotiated via a contract or a regulation
  • It cannot be delegated
  • It is not something to be “built” in the wake of a crisis
  • It is not “the buzzword of the day.”

When we hear the word “trust” we should envision a way of being, a lifestyle that includes:

  • Acting with integrity at all times, no exceptions
  • Respecting others
  • Making ethical decisions
  • Shaking the hand of a partner in business or in your personal life, looking them in the eye, and telling them that you are extending trust.

Build a lifestyle of trust, beginning with self-trust, and extend trust to those around you. It will be reciprocated.  You will experience a higher quality of life, as will those who learned from your example.

Should Inlaws be Outlawed?  This was the title of a recent blog post written by my friend Erris Klapper. For those of you who may not know Erris, her blog is a well-written and thoughtful commentary, primarily focused on the trials and tribulations of baby boomers and their families, as well as coverage of other timely topics.

Erris believes that the two root causes of (in-law) contention are elevated levels of expectation and differences in upbringing.

Doesn’t the same apply to the Board/CEO relationship, leader/manager/employee relationship, or any relationship for that matter?

And like in-laws, in most business environments controversy could be avoided and trust could be built if time were invested early in the relationship to:

  • Explore common ground by discussing respective upbringing
  • Discuss goals and values
  • Map out a course for the future
  • Determine how disagreements will be handled.

Whether you are about to be married, or about to begin a new job or hire a new employee, invest the time to work through the four steps above. Building trust early in any relationship will pay off handsomely in the long-run.

Six months later we released our second book, Trust Inc. A Guide for Boards & C-SuitesIn this book, sixty experts have joined forces to offer 100 strategies.

Throughout the month of August, we will be featuring 31 essays from our second book. Warning: Don’t Drown in the Slogan Swamp Given deterioration in consumer trust, we are witnessing more and more activities and initiatives coming from organizations and brands regarding the trend I’ve called “FOR THE” (for the community, for the environment, for the weak). In today’s atmosphere, terms like Corporate Social Responsibility, Corporate Citizenship, Sustainable Responsible Business, Environmental Sustainability, are popping up like mushrooms.

But these beautiful initiatives can sometimes turn into a threatening danger. A danger I call “The Trap of Drowning into Slogans” When can this danger occur? In order to answer this critical question, we have to look in the mirror in the most sincere way and examine the real motive for these acts:

  • Were they initiated because of our incompetence in dealing with the crisis in trust emanating from our consumers?
  • Were they initiated as an alternative tool to our traditional marketing tools that have been tainted by consumers who consider these tools to be manipulative, self-interested and exploitative?
  • Were they initiated only to distract consumers from ethical questions posed by our core operations?If the answer to these questions is YES, then we are deeply stuck in the “Slogan Swamp”.Our consumers are smart and clever and are telling us: “NO MORE”. No more lies. No more tricks. No more masks.As long as we don’t change something from within, as long as we keep on pretending, keep on lying to ourselves, we will keep on drowning in this downward swamp.

C-Suite Leaders Must Learn to Speak with a V.O.I C.E. of Trust

“I cannot hear what you say, because your actions scream “INSINCERITY” so loudly”

The currency of leadership is credibility! Collins & Porras told us so in their 1994 book, “Built to Last”. Draw the ‘credibility’ account down too low and you risk losing your team, and quite possibly your job. So how does one maintain a strong ‘credibility’ current-ratio? The answer is simple…use your V.O.I.C.E. and learn how become an Altrupreneur.

Values: Know what you believe and allow those beliefs to inform every interaction. Kouzes and Posner advise us: “To be credible as a leader, you must first clarify your own values, the standards by which you choose to live your life.”

Optimism: To inspire engagement leaders must take the long view, remain fixed on the vision and strive persistently toward the goal – despite the upheaval and tumult along the way. Daily mood swings do not inspire trust.

Integrity: The word, ‘integrity’, signifies wholeness; an absence of duality; a “what- you-see-is-who-I-am” persona. At its most basic, Integrity is alignment between beliefs, words, and actions. Be who you say you are.

Courage: Take reasoned risks in pursuit of team objectives. Take risks with people; allow them to try, and pick them up when they fail – help them fail forward.

Enthusiasm: Passion is contagious; regrettably, so are ambivalence, doubt, and detachment. Enthusiasm conveys a deeply held belief in the validity of the endeavor. It tells the team, “I believe in what we’re doing”. They will too!
